Here's a fun activity that you can do with your little one as we continue to talk about Sometimes Food and Anytime Food on Mr. Mike TV. It's called, "Sorting A Caterpillar Lunch," and it stars Cathy the Caterpillar. She is pretty hungry and looking for something to eat, but she definitely prefers to eat Anytime Food - this way she knows that she will stay healthy (and she'll be ready to turn into a butterfly when the time comes). The only problem is that not all of the food on the page with Cathy is Anytime Food. Your kiddo's job is to cut out the pictures of food out along the lines and then sort them, eventually gluing one piece of Anytime Food to each of the plates at the bottom of the page. Don't worry too much if your child is having some trouble cutting on those lines. One of the reasons that this is such a good activity is because it helps to strengthen those skills. I do have some things you can try that might help, though --> An Easier Way To Cut With Scissors

Oh, and as far as the glue goes, when I do work on an activity like this, I prefer for the focus to remain just a few little things - in this case: the cutting and then distinguishing between the types of food, and placing them appropriately. So, if it were me doing this activity, I would just use a glue stick as opposed to the white school glue. Kids tend to go a little overboard with the liquid stuff. If your kiddo is having a super-easy time with the other stuff and is ready for the next step, or if he is begging to use the other glue, I have come across some helpful hints over the years that have helped even the most glue-happy child work on using appropriate amounts of the sticky stuff. Here's a link there --> Stop The Glue Mess!

To continue to drive home the healthy eating bit, make sure to chat with your child a little bit about what would happen Cathy only wanted to eat Sometimes Food. Would she keep growing to be healthy and strong? Would she be able to turn into a beautiful butterfly someday? Probably not.

Do you learn better by watching as opposed to reading? ---> Sorting A Caterpillar Lunch on YouTube

I hope you enjoy Caterpillar Munch as much as I do!

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EctcFhw07UAendofvid[starttext]

This is a fantastic story about a little (but very hungry) caterpillar's journey from caterpillar to butterfly. It also lends itself to be a great example of the proper use of sometimes food and anytime food. Plus, kids love Eric Carle books!

Kids Craft: Painting Apples... With Apples!

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_DTJLIwiVFgendofvid [starttext]
Here's a really fun craft that ties right into the theme of "Sometimes Foods and Anytime Foods."

But, in case you were wondering, here are those links I promised you in the video:

One of the things that I always noticed that kids love is painting with something other than a paintbrush. So, we would paint with all sorts of things - hands, feet, sponges, marbles, and then some. There were even times when we used food to paint. In this case, we're going to use an apple to help us paint a picture of an apple.

Here's What You Need:
• Tempera or Poster Paint (red, green, or yellow)
• School glue
• An apple (mini apples work great for this craft)
• An apple outline (or the printable to the left)

Here's What To Do:
1. Cut the apple in half (Probably best for the grownup to do this part, although there are definitely some kiddos who are working on cutting with a knife. You know your little one best.)
2. Pick out the apple seeds from both halves of the apple and set them aside.
3. Spread lots of paint onto one half of the apple OR Pour some paint into a shallow bowl and dip the apple in it.
4. Start dotting your apple picture with the painted apple half. Stop to "refill" your apple if you start running out of paint.
5. After your apple is all painted, go ahead and glue those saved seeds onto the paper, right next to the apple.
6. Count the seeds and, if you child is up for it, she can even write the number of seeds next to them as well OR you can write it and she can copy it OR you can write it and she can trace over it.

Remember as you're working on this activity that apples are a great Anytime Food that are healthy to eat Anytime you are allowed to have a snack. In fact, when you're all done with this craft, you should have an extra half-an-apple laying around, just waiting to be eaten!!!

Enjoy!!

Preschool Learning: Animal Crackers (Sometimes/Anytime Food Series, part 2)

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TrA66G74IQ0endofvid
[starttext]
One of the preschoolers in my class helped me to come up with this song while she was eating snack a few years ago. Thanks, Julia!!!

Animal crackers are so good
They taste so good in my belly, in my belly
They taste so good in my belly, in my belly
They taste so good in my belly, in my belly
Grilled cheese sandwiches are so good
They taste so good in my belly, in my belly
They taste so good in my belly, in my belly
They taste so good in my belly, in my belly

All these foods that I love to eat
Some are good for me and some are treats, yeah
If I eat the right food each day
My body can make energy, so I can play

Chocolate chip cookies are so good
They taste so good in my belly, in my belly
They taste so good in my belly, in my belly
They taste so good in my belly, in my belly
Pepperoni pizza is so good
They taste so good in my belly, in my belly
They taste so good in my belly, in my belly
They taste so good in my belly, in my belly

Candy, chips, and popcorn, too,
May not be so good for you
But, meats and beans, fruits and veggies all the time
Then, you can eat anything and be just fine

Animals crackers are so good
They taste so good in my belly, in my belly
They taste so good in my belly, in my belly
They taste so good in my belly, in my belly
