Sorting Candy Cane For Christmas (with modification)
Among tons of other things that make me smile and feel good, candy canes give me that Christmas feeling, every time I see them. Today, we're going to look at a candy cane activity from the Confessions of A... Homeschooler Christmas Activity Pack. We have been talking about this set of activities for a while now, working on modifying some of the activities to help out kiddos who might need just a little bit more. The candy cane page that we're going to focus on is on page 21 of the pack. Go ahead and download it if you haven't already and then meet me right back here!
MODIFICATION: This activity is going to require an adult to cut out the candy cane squares prior to presenting the activity to your little one. Normally, I would say that you should let the kid cut if she wants to cut but, since this is a, "sorting by size," activity, it truly matters that they are all cut out accurately and on the appropriate lines. Some children may be able to take a look at all of the candy canes, placed on the table in front of them, and begin the sorting. Others may be a little overwhelmed by the number of them. What to do? Try only putting 2 in front of your kiddo at a time, letting her sort those before moving on to the next 2. Make sure, by the way, to give her, say, the smallest 2 squares to work with first, then the next 2 squares and so on. This way, as she completes each set of 2, she will be able to keep adding on to the ones that she already has arranged. Doing 2 at a time will leave the biggest candy cane for last, all by itself. Go ahead and ask your child where she thinks it goes and let her place that one. Hooray! Good job!
