Valentine's Sorting (with modification)

On the Over The Big Moon website, you can find lots of fun and educational activities. In fact, we've talked about a few here at MrMikeTV.com before. Today, we're going to take a look at a sorting task made especially for Valentine's Day. It's on page 14 of the Preschool Pack, available right here:

MODIFICATION: Sorting activities are fantastic for helping kiddos develop their visual discrimination skills. This is a major way that children learn and, so, something like this activity is just right for this age group. I have worked with some children who have had trouble with this sort of activity for an easily fixable reason. Because the kids can't read, they don't understand what those words at the top of each of the two boxes say. For many children, we can tell them that the one box says, "Kids," and the other says, "Valentine's Gifts," and they'll be able to hold that information in their head throughout the task of sorting through the cutout pictures and figuring out in which category each piece belongs. For other little ones, however, that might prove to be a little trickier. An easy enough solution to this would be to draw little pictures right next to the words. Nothing fancy - you can draw a stick figure next to, "Kids," and a gift (a square with a little squiggle - bow - on top, will suffice) next to, "Valentine's Gifts." Then, when you hand the paper to the child you can point to the word, read it, and then let them know what the picture represents. This could well take this activity from frustrating to fun (while also promoting pre-reading). Enjoy!
