Today's Preschool! for September 6, 2013

Arrival/Quiet Play	Set out some toys before the children arrive for the day. Whether you limit the little ones to these several choices or not is totally up to you, but it's a great place for them to start and may even remind them of a toy that you have that they haven't played with in a while.
Clean Up	Here's a super fun video to encourage your kiddos to get the room all picked up and get themselves ready for Circle Time, complete with a 2 minute pre-cleanup warning! Clean It Up Crew!
Circle Time	It's our first time getting together for the day! "Let's Say Hello!" is a great way to get your kiddos smiling, paying attention, and participating in their learning. After we say, "hello," it's a great opportunity for you to chat with the children about the calendar - the day, the month, and the year; count down to any fun upcoming events on the calendar; the weather; etc.
Table Time	Does pizza belong in a backpack or in a lunchbox? That's the subject of a great sorting activity ready for your kiddos today. Grab your scissors and let's start Backpack and Lunchbox Sorting! As your children finish up their work, consider having something like crayons and paper available for them to use at the table, until everyone has completed the activity. It's a great way to keep everyone in the same area and gives you the ability to provide help to the kiddos who have not yet finished, while still keeping and eye on, and helping when needed, the others.

Backpack And Lunchbox Sorting (with modifications)

Sorting activities are always a lot of fun, and you can really do

them anytime and anywhere. Today, we'll be using a worksheet, some scissors, and some glue. But, little ones can sort everything from toys, to dried beans and have a great time doing it. That's because that classification section of their brains that is just learning what everything is and how it all works together is so active when they're little, a sorting activity is right up their alley! This is a back to school sorting activity and your kiddo will be asked to figure out which items, represented by pictures at the bottom of the page belong in a backpack and which belong in a lunchbox. I have a thought as well as a modification to share today. If you want to grab the worksheet first, so you can follow along a little bit easier, that would be great. Just grab it from, First Grade a la Carte.

MODIFICATIONS: Before I even mention a modification, I wanted to take a quick minute to talk about how much I love the pictures at the bottom of the two sorting columns - the one with the child holding a backpack and the one with the kiddo holding the lunchbox. Those types of visuals really help little ones grasp what they are being asked to do and focus on the task at hand, rather than trying to remember which column is supposed to be home to which picture. One of the things that your little one is going to be asked to do in this task, before sorting, is to cut out the pictures at the bottom of the page. If cutting is not your child's strong suit, try highlighting the lines that form the squares at the bottom of the page. Sometimes, that extra visual cue can make all the difference between a child who can't seem to cut and all and a scissors superstar!

School Supply Matching (with modifications)

Let's talk school supplies! After all, what would school be without erasers, rulers, pencils, and glue. Today, we are going to get a chance to work on a school supply matching activity. The idea is to match a word in the column on the right hand side of the page to it's corresponding picture, in the middle of the page. Take a look at the worksheet on the iSLCollective site and then we'll talk about the different things that you can do to make this activity as accessible for your little one as possible.

MODIFICATIONS: Right off the bat, I'm guessing that your kiddo doesn't read just yet. And, if she does, she might not be up to words like, "computer,""sharpener," and "scissors." I thought that a great way to handle this would be for you to go ahead and point to the first word in the right-hand column and tell you little one that, "this says, 'eraser.' " Then look for an eraser together on the page, starting at the very top left and working first to the right and then down the page, just like you would read a book - left to right and top to bottom (might as well work on some extra pre-reading skills, right?) If you're little one can right the corresponding number into the little circle, then more power to 'em. Otherwise, you can go ahead and do it - or you can write the number in highlighter and have your kiddo trace it. No matter how you do it, this one should be a little fun and a little challenge!

Count and Color School Supplies (with modifications)

Pens, glue sticks, scissors and more - here's a great activity that reminds us of some of the fun supplies we'll be using this year! This one gets your kiddo using his counting skills, his coloring skills, his visual discrimination skills... you name it, it's here! The best way for you to follow along with my modifications is if you take a peek at the activity first, for yourself. It's on the ESL Kid Stuff website.

MODIFICATIONS: There is a lot going on, on this worksheet.

Help your child to focus by explaining the directions and how the task can be accomplished, one step at a time. Also, since your little one probably isn't reading just yet, go ahead and highlight the color names with their corresponding colors before you even let you child look at the worksheet. When you're giving your little one strategies to help him complete this task, don't be afraid to point and touch what you are talking about and to be specific. For example, direct his attention to the first picture on the bottom section of the page. Point to the glue stick and say, "Here is a glue stick." Then look at the top section of the page with your kiddo. "Can you touch another glue stick? Good job, that's one. Find another one... two... three... four. Great job! You found 4 glue sticks. Let's write the number in the box. Oh! It's already written for us. Great! 4 glues sticks. What color do you think that you're supposed to color them?" Point to the highlighted word. "Blue, you're right!" Obviously, just an example, but you get the point. Depending on your little one, you might even want to do the same thing one more time, with the eraser, just underneath the picture of the glue stick. Have fun!

M&Ms School Bus Math (with modifications)

When I think about "back to school" time, school buses are definitely something that come to mind. This activity includes school buses and M&Ms (which aren't necessarily school-ish, but they are yummy! You can substitute anything you want for the candy, be it gummy bears or a different favorite candy or even pieces of cracker, ham... you name it, go ahead and use it! MODIFICATIONS: When I have played games with kiddos involving food, it has always helped to set very clear boundaries as to which food will be eaten and when. Before you even start the activity with your child, make sure to do this. Otherwise, especially with a type of treat that your child really enjoys, she will spend her time wondering when she gets to eat as opposed to focusing on the task at hand. For this activity, modeling (doing the activity yourself, as an example) a turn or two might help to make the whole thing much more clear. Go ahead and roll the die and count the dots. Write the number that you have counted to in the front window of the school bus. Point at the written number and say its name out loud. Now go ahead and then take the treats, one at a time, and place them on the windows of the school bus. When you've done that, "check" your work with your little one, counting each of the treats while touching them as your go, one at a time. Did you get it right? Hooray! Now eat them up and get ready to start all over again!
