Which One Is Different? (with visual discrimination tips)

From magazines to newspapers to... well... online preschool pack worksheets, you can find, "Which One Is Different?" activities everywhere. And they are so good for kiddos who are working on their visual discrimination skills. I found this particular worksheet and thought that it provided a really great opportunity to share some thoughts with you.

You're little one is being asked, in this activity, to find the picture that is different than the rest. Your goal here is to help your kiddo figure out how to look at all of these pictures, in a systematic manner, so as to be able to complete the task. Go ahead and reiterate the task to your little one. Then, together and using your finger to actually touch the images on the page, have your child look at each picture, one at a time. "Hmm... do you see which one is different?" If they answer incorrectly, or if they simply aren't sure, go ahead and go back to the first one and work with your child to notice some of the details. You'll know which ones to focus on because you know the detail that has been changed in the one that is different. "Let's look at this butterfly. She has pink wings with two big red dots. And this one has pink wings with two big red dots. Those are the same. And this one has pink wings with... wait... something is missing. What is missing?...... The two big red dots! So those two were the same, but this one is different!" Something like that.

The worksheet that I am talking about, specifically, can be found at This Reading MamaHave fun!
