Counting Coins (with modifications)

The Gold Count Count activity on pages 2-4 of the St. Patrick's Day Preschool Packet from Preschool Powol Packets gives me a great opportunity to talk about counting for little ones. The idea behind this activity is that a child is supposed to count the gold coins and, then, select the number that corresponds to the amount of coins from the choices below, and trace it.This can get overwhelming for some kiddos and, so, after you check out the activity, check out my thoughts below for an easy way to overcome this problem.

MODIFICATIONS: Aside from learning to recognize the written forms of numbers, the big thing that children are supposed to take away from this activity is some great practice with 1-1 correspondence. You can learn a little bit more about that in my, "What Is 1-1 Correspondence?" video. What you can suggest that your child do to help with confusion in counting, and really drill the 1-1 correspondence thing home, is to have your kiddo draw an, "X," over each of the coins as he counts them. This way, he avoids counting the same coins several times, leading to possible confusion and frustration. Have fun!
