Valentine's Cutting Practice (with modification)

Here's another fantastic activity from Over The Big Moon. This one is a Cutting Practice task. You can find it on page 5 of the Preschool Pack. Here's the link to grab that pack, if you haven't already

MODIFICATION: This is the type of task that  can be so beneficial to kiddos because of the great skills that it can help them develop. You wouldn't believe how often simple cutting comes up in the Preschool/Kindergarten years. If it's the physical act of cutting that is the problem, there are definitely some tools that you can try to help out your little one. There are scissors that allow a child to cut without putting their fingers in the holes, as they are specially designed to reopen themselves when pressure is released: Like These Ones. There are also these ones, Like These, that don't have holes at all and, similarly have a small spring that allows them to open back up after each cut. They will both help a child develop the coordination and strength necessary for cutting.

Sometimes, though, it is not the physical act of cutting that give children the most difficulty. If your child seems to be physically able to cut, but is still having difficulty cutting on a line, try using a highlighter (or marker or crayon) to highlight the line. Something about the brighter, more visible line can make a world of difference, no matter how thick the big black line is you're starting with. Blue or green have been my favorite colors to highlight cutting lines with, but I think that's just me! Enjoy!
