There's nothing like a good, "Follow the Directions," activity, if you ask me! And, once you add a Christmas theme to it, it becomes that much better. There are lots of great Christmas activities over at TLSBooks.com. The one that I just found has Christmas trees, ornaments, gingerbread men, and candles on it and has 4 different directions that kiddos are supposed to follow. You can get the worksheet here:
MODIFICATION: When you really think about it, there are a lot of steps that need to be taken in order to complete any one of the directions on the activity page. For example, when a child is asked to color 2 gingerbread men brown, they must figure out which crayon is brown, which picture is a gingerbread man, count the appropriate number of gingerbread men, and do the actual coloring (while remembering that they are only supposed to color 2, the whole time). Breaking down a request like this can be very useful and important in helping a child learn how to process information successfully. Rather than just telling your little one to color 2 gingerbread men brown, why not first ask your child to point to a gingerbread man. Now, have your kiddo count the gingerbread men on the page. Once this is done, you can mention that, in just a minute, she is going to get to color just 2 gingerbread men. Can she point to just 2 gingerbread men? Gingerbread is usually brown, so you are going to us a brown crayon to color those 2 gingerbread men. Can she find a brown crayon? Now, she can use that brown crayon to color just the 2 gingerbread men. See how that works for you!
