Christmas Beginning Letter Sounds Activity (with modifications)

We've been talking a lot about the preschool worksheet available at 1+1+1=1. They are some really great activities to get little ones in the Christmas mood (as if they need any help)! As we do here at Mr. Mike TV, I've been offering modifications to these activities, based on things that have worked for me and the kiddos that I have worked with, when working on similar activities. The last page that we're going to look at from this particular set of activities is the Beginning Letter Sounds worksheet. The page features pictures of the key players in the Christmas story, divided into 9 rectangles, each with 3 letters at the bottom of the card. Children are asked to identify which of the letters at the bottom of the card is representative of the letter sound at the beginning of the word pictured in the rectangle. Check it out for yourself and then come on back here for some additional thoughts and suggestions:

MODIFICATIONS: This is a great activity, because it really gets at some good pre-reading concepts. If your little one seems to be having some trouble, you might try looking at the picture together with her, and working on identifying the beginning letter sound. For example, if there is a picture of Mary, go ahead and sound the word out with your child: "Mmmmary." Then ask, "What letter makes the, 'Mmmmm,' sound?" When you and your little one decide that it is the letter, "M," that makes the, "Mmmmm," sound, go ahead and write the letter, "M," at the top of the rectangle. Then, make sure to mention to the child that, "Look, Mary starts with the letter, 'M,' the "Mmmmm," sound." Then go ahead and try to match up the letter at the top of the rectangle with the one below the picture. Perfect!
